Temporary SMS services like SMSPVA let you receive a one-time verification code for as little as $0.50. It seems cheap and dodgy. And it is!

The numbers are shared, not yours

Services like SMSPVA services give you access to a number for a single SMS, or at most for an hour or so. After that, the number is recycled back into the pool and rented to someone else. You have no way to receive a message on that number again, ever.

"But I only need it once". Most likely, you'll be asked to re-verify the number again with another SMS code as soon as you change IP or even if you just log in via VPN. Gmail etc will flag that login as high risk and then ask you to SMS verify again. So you essentially lose the account.

The problem is, often services will use third party SMS verfication APIs, like Twilio etc. So the number starts to get flagged by these services if it's used for everything. While it may still work for another service that doesn't utilise Twilio SMS verification under the hood, other services might, so it's a bit of a risk.

You probably don't care about risking 50c, so it seems like a pretty good "try it and see" gamble to take. The problem is that even if you pass SMS verification now, the account you just made will get banned at random in future when the number is flagged or re-used in future. So if you're sharing the reputation of some potentially dodgy people. Maybe you're dodgy too, so maybe you're fine with that, and fine with your account being banned. We are not about that life.
